Telford Coronation Walks

Walk Number

23

Sutton Hill/Coalport

Follow part of the Monarch's Way

This walk tells the story of another King Charles, who once fled for his life across what is now a golf course and new housing estates in Sutton Hill, to hide in a hay barn in Madeley. Full of historic and scenic interest, the walk traces what we think were his footsteps. Lots of the walk is on quiet roads and pavements. However, there are fields and woodland paths too, which may be muddy, so robust footwear is best. Starting from Sutton Hill Local Centre, we visit the oldest parts of Madeley, follow disused canals and railways past old pit mounds, climb to the scenic viewpoint at the top of the Hay Incline behind Blists Hill Museum, wander through pretty woods, dingles, across a golf course and playing fields, before returning to Sutton Hill..
